Make friends in SAO PAULO –
We followed Gil because he looked like David Macklovitch (Chromeo singer) and ended up in the cutest hidden vintage shop of SP. We met all his friends and tried all his clothes- Check B.Luxo http://brecholuxo.blogspot.com/ (prices are in Reals - divide them by 4 to get the pound equivalence).
The store opened two months ago since surface 2 air SP closed for refurbishment before reopening for their 1 year anniversary lest week.
Brecho Luxo is literally like a small beyond retro with Brazilian rock in the background. Check all those people (and me!) on www.freakstyle-freakstyle.blogspot.com

Most of them only speak a few words in English, which made the experience even more interesting…

Paula and Gil the owners of the shop

Big up to Aline and Dj Foka! (= Dj Seal!)

M.O.N.O 4- those guys are great! CHECK THEM OUT! - http://www.myspace.com/monofour

But talking about people only speaking a few words in English check

As my friend Emmy said, its like if they had bought an english dictionary and picked out a few random words to write their « songs » - The worst but funniest act i’ve ever seen !

GIRLCORE = Good Sexy

By Becky

In 2006 Simian Mobile Disco released the really rather good "Hustler" and enlisted GIRLCORE to help with the really rather good video (see above). After all, what’s a snog fest between friends? They've now re-released it with an all-new video (see below). Jeremy from "The Feed" has compared the two videos to articulately demonstrate that there is a huge disparity between Good Sexy and Bad Sexy.

Kaiju Big Battel returns to NY - Flux up, look sharp.

By Carmelita Morales

Last week I posted the new Bloc Party video for "Flux" which features cute, japanese-y battling monsters. Well, upon more investigation I found that they are real fighters in the Kaiju Battles which happen all over the US as far as I can tell. Imagine WWF mixed with Godzilla and you have an idea. They have a new DVD out called "More Better Fighto".

In honor of the release the battle is headed to NYC in November. I may have to take advantage of super cheap flights to NY on my beloved Virgin Airlines for this one. To read more about Kaiju Battles go to www.kaiju.com

Here's just one live video I found on youtube.
ARRRRRE You REady to rrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRuuuuuuuuumble????!!!!!!

About Kaiju Big Battel

Kaiju Big Battel is a modern conflict of epic proportions. Planet Earth is under threat: scattered throughout the galaxy is a monstrous mob of maniacal villains, menacing alien beasts, and giant, city-crushing monsters that are waging war against one another. Presiding over this mayhem is the Kaiju Commissioner, an enigmatic human-arbiter appointed by a clandestine cadre of world leaders to regulate Kaiju rage. If the Kaiju Commissioner doesn’t do his job perfectly the entire world could get caught in the crossfire.

Currently, the Kaiju Universe maintains an active roster of approximately 50 monsters, including a factory-worker-turned-soup-can called Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle, a dirty hare-sage dubbed Dusto Bunny, a loser sea beast known as Call-Me-Kevin, and a despicable, square-headed mad scientist known as Dr. Cube.

R Kelly Is A Genius

by Marisa Brickman

I know people think we're supposed to be all feminist and shit because we're called *GIRLCORE*, but sometimes we have a soft spot for chauvinist rappers - well, really just R. Kelly.

We forgive him for fucking that teenage girl in the hotel room (but give him mad props for then writing a song about it - WTF?). We can even overlook the child pornography and pissing on a minor - part of the 21 counts he faced as part of fucking that minor. We even forgive him for doing a duet with Celine Dion.

There is no denying that R. Kelly hands down is the smoothest guy on the planet and I'm sure you'll agree that "Bump N' Grind" and "Ignition" might be two of the best slow jams of all time. He's recently extended his youtube rants to include a special version of an up close and personal "Real Talk".

"I decided to do this shit 'Real Talk' on youtube because I think its a great song, you know what I'm sayin'? Even though there's a lot of profanity in it, but profanity represents just how real shit gets when you arguing with your girl and shit..."

R. Dawg even though we love you and forgive you, not to sure we'd want to be your girl. However, we might want you to tap that ass.

Blood Spot

My miniature sausage dog, Minnie has just started her first period. I look forward to mood swings, irrational behaviour (such as her eagerly trotting after boys who are not even worth a quick sniff of the butt) and her accusatory stare of my betraying the sista hood because I won’t allow her to snuggle up and fall asleep on my latest shift dress.

I wish I could be more supportive of my baby girl as she quickly ascends into woman hood. But periods suck and that’s all there is to it. Boys, as far as I’m concerned, if we were ever to have a debate to end all debates on the battle of the sexes – that would be your trump card. Play it however and us girls would be so offended (there is a damn good chance there’ll be a hormonal disco occurring, as we tend to sync our cycles together) that we’ll quickly adopt a more literal outlook on the whole battle of the sexes idea.

Essentially, this is our lot and there are some rough times ahead for my little sausage. As I’m sure you are aware, there are plenty of medical ways to help ease the need to hysterically cry whilst watching Neighbours once a month. If like Minnie however, you’d rather not be sterilised / take the pill / have a chip in your paw / and hate the fact that you can’t sit down for a week after the nurse injects you in the ass, there’s still hope. So if you need a little help to fight off the crazed woman from hell syndrome every 28 days or so, here are some things the NHS would recommend you give a go. (Unfortunately for Minnie, the Veterinary World still has some work to do).

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Agnus castus fruit extract
St John’s Wort
Red Clover
Sunshine (Here’s hoping).

Kittincore

by Lokicia

I am totally in touch with my feminine side when it comes to appreciating the work of female artists of all kinds. Feist, Coco Rosie and Bjork were the three best concerts I’ve been to in the past year, a Frida Khalo will inspire me more than a Picasso, and I’d rather watch a movie with Audrey Hepburn than Fred Astaire (but that could also be for different reasons).

I am not saying that girls are better at art than boys, and I know it shouldn’t be a question of gender but about the piece of work itself. However it makes sense because the piece of work is an extension of the artist – therefore I’m a girl so I can identify and relate more to what females have to express through their art. And that’s also probably why we are always eager to find out more about the person creating rather than just appreciate the work.

To me in the world of electronic music, it makes no doubt that the person who manages to touch me the most is Miss Kittin. Yes, she is a female. Yes, her work is totally inspiring. And what makes her even more special is that, as a person, she is as generous as when she is behind the decks working her arse off to make us dance.

Here is what she had to say to my questions…

(P.S: hey I still think boys rule and have good things to say too!)

You played at Wet Yourself in London recently. I always tell you how amazing your sets are, and that one didn't fail . You told me you'd been preparing this one for a week and defined it as a 'gay set'..! Where do you find your inspiration as DJ?
Everywhere! It's a question of intuition, of mood. It's my job to give an intention to what I want to do.

How do you get hold of the music you play these days?

Mainly promotion, but I also listen to what other DJs play, and read music press, especially for the music I listen to at home. It's a small world, it's easy to get the information, but so many releases come out every month, again you have to trust your instinct. It doesn't matter if you don't know everything, as long as you cultivate your taste.

You've recently released Hometown EP with The Hacker and are doing a live tour together. How is it working together again in the studio and on stage?
We are like brother and sister, so it's easy. We don't have to talk a lot and discuss things, it just happens. He works on the music in our hometown, Grenoble, where he still lives, and I "dress up" the song with my lyrics at home. I record my voice and edit it by myself, I love it. The result is much better than if we were working in the same space. We know what we have to do and totally trust each other. We still can compose together, but we enjoy it that way for now, we take the freedom and time we need without bothering the other.

Production-wise, do you have any solo releases coming up, or any interesting collaborations we should know about?
I just come back from London where I spent two days with Primal Scream. It was great. I don't know what will come out of what we did. But end of the month I have a single coming out "kittin is high", the 1st of my following 2nd solo album "Batbox" out in january 2008. Jojo is remixing it!

What do you think is hot right now?
He he good question. At the moment, I really like Tektonik, this dance movement. It's really big in France right now! Music is shit but evrywhere in clubs you have kids making these funny moves with funny looks! Like this video, rehearsal after school. If you are interested, the key word for your research is tck on dailymotion or youtube.

Describe your perfect party - and *girlcore* will try and organise it ;-)
He he I like that! But I don't think I can say that in public... Meet my best friends for "apero", then go for dinner in a place we love, and go crazy in a party, shake, and see what happens... Sometimes, my perfect party is to order chinese and watch TV at home! The last perfect party I had was with my best friend, after spending 2 days in the Swiss mountains, we stopped in Zurich, had a fab dinner, and ended in a legendary Goth party called "More than mode". Music was so cool (Sisters of Mercy, Nitzer Ebb etc...), people dressed up crazy, it was so classy. We loved it.

What do blind people dream of?
To see their children.

Which female do you most look up to?
I am a big fan of Diana Rigg, Emma Peel, an independant woman, mysterious, fit, with style, a fast mind. At the moment I am very into Debbie Harry, because I am starting playing live again, and I need inspiration to feel comfortable on stage. I am not the kind of performer to roll on the floor, spit or tell jokes. I prefer to look more classy and pro, as she is. I need to cultivate a certain nonchalance, distance, and coldness to help me focusing on singing in tune and at the right time.

Our collective *girlcore* started as a fun night out between a bunch of girls. We are now actually making things happen, and taking on projects at a global scale. I see it as a platform for each girl to put into practice their creative skills. What product or service do you think *girlcore* should launch?
Good one! Girlcore would be a nice name for a red lipstick. But if it existed, I would suggest to create a course to help girls to find self confidence in themselves instead of looking for it outside, in fame and pretending. Know what I mean? A kind of therapy course for beginner artists! This would be a total social help product, I tell you...

The Whitest Boy Alive!

by Lokicia

The Whitest Boy Alive easily found its place in my itunes top 25 most played tracks this year; i would always get a 'oh you always play this' kind of comment from the guys at work each time the drums of 'Burning' would kick in from my speakers. None the less, i was feeding them with great music. I think.

One of the reasons of my visit to Berlin in May was to see them live; but for more than one reason i couldn't attend the show. But last night, Modular Records brought them over for a special London show. As I arrived, I quickly realized that I was not the only one excited about this. Obviously, my name was on the list (!), but the venue reached full capacity 1 hour before the performance was due... What to do? I couldn't miss them again.

*girlcore* stylee, me and my friend jumped over a barrier and managed to get in. There we were confronted to more queues, but managed to squeeze our bodies to the front. And from there, we enjoyed the show. And a great show it was. It started off with a soundcheck in front of the audience which got everyone in the mood I guess. The performance of their tracks was great, some were funkified discofied, some were played slower, some faster. The guys in the band looked as if they really enjoyed the show and interacted a lot with the audience (and lighting engineers). But I think the highlight for most people was the cover they did of Show Me Love by Robin S that got everyone singing hands in the air. They also did a pretty amazing cover of Portishead's 'Give Me a Reason'.

What was meant to be a private showcase turned out to be a massive pit. But I still enjoyed it immensely. Big props to Kirsten from Modular and *girlcore* for trying her best to hold it together.

And yes, I played the album again today at work.

If you haven't listened to any of their stuff, what are you doing, check them out now. www.myspace.com/thewhitestboyalive
