Italians Do It Better
by Carmelita Morales
I was just in Modena and Turin, Italy this weekend and am feeling a bit of a chocolate hangover. I went to a Sunday market in this tiny town near Modena and my god did I feel like I'd died and gone to heaven. It was just bread and cheese and chocolate everywhere! They had this huge 8 foot piece if bread cut in half, filled inside with nutella. You just ask for a piece and they slice one off for you. Then there was the REAL hot chocolate. I'm not talking powder shit, I mean the people are melting the dark chocolate pieces in front of you and topping it with chili flakes (it brings out the cocoa flavour and isn't really spicy at all).
But the best bit was the homemade chocolate liquor. One hot, teeny cup of this and you are both drunk and high (on chocolate). Nothing could be better on a cold day than this shizz. I bought 2 bottles from the guy making it fresh right in front of me. It's thick and pure melted chocolate mixed with vodka or white rum, then poured into an old wine bottle. If you are looking for cheap amazing x-mas presents I suggest you be the best gift-giver ever and make some at home to give away.
Homemade Rum/Vodka Chocolate Liquor Recipe
Ingredients:
500 grams sugar
1/2 liter milk
200 grams good dark chocolate, melted
1/2 liter white rum or vodka
10 grams vanilla sugar (i dont know what this is but im sure you can just use normal sugar and add vanilla extract)
Pour the sugar in half of the milk and boil til the sugar melts.
Mix melted dark chocolate in the other half of milk (without cooking) and pour it in boiling sweetened milk. Add vanilla sugar and white rum and remove from the heat.
Pour in an old wine bottle and let it stand like that for a few days for best results (shake it occasionally). Viola!

Observations as of 09/11/2007 (From a London-trained, Colombia-born exile)
- It is actually a lot warmer here (sorry about the bragging, couldn´t help it!)
- The best-dressed men are all gay.
- There´s a pharmacy practically in every corner. (Do Spanish people get sick more often or is it just for the aesthetic pleasure?)
- Tourists are all the same, in every country.
- Same goes with posh people.
- It´s not trucker caps like Vice said. It is "The Skullet" with a dread finish that will never go out of fashion in Spain.
- Toilets are easier to flush.
- Catalan sounds quite funny (No offense to catalunians, I´m definitely planning on going on catalan lessons)
- There is an active reaction to fur-wearing. Or at least that´s what I gather from having been scolded about my coat in the street by a complete stranger. He just yelled behind my ear: "Oooh, freshly-killed rabbit!"
- As much as I´ve made it a resolution to not think about boys (don´t snigger), I can´t help but notice I´ve only seen one fit (straight) boy in the whole day. What will happen when I do start thinking about boys?
OK so that´s it for now. I won´t go into how much I find myself comparing everything and everyone to London, or how it made me cry to see its lights below me from the plane, or how much I miss everyone I left there. That´s too cheesy and like, what´s the point in that?

Hot Craft by Hot Chicks
By Carmelita Morales
The colder it gets the craftier I get. I guess it's just good ol' hibernational fun. Last year I picked up knitting, this summer I started embroidery and managed to create a pretty good replication of my surly cat despite his attempts to sabatoge my creation every step of the way.
This month at Sesame Art Gallery a few amazing crafty ladies have put together a show called Wild Styles: Hot Craft, a new exhibit of work from seven women who give traditional, hand-made pieces an exciting, punked-up revival. These emerging and established stars of craft reject the hippie label of their domestic skills and are quickly supplanting graffiti as the latest art collectable. Watch out for Bill Hicks and Iggy Pop embroideries, 70s porn emblazoned rugs, 'Get Ur Freak On' needlepoint samplers, and Danielle Proud's gothic, bejewelled gargoyle heads.
Speaking of Danielle Proud, I bought her book 'House Proud' last year because it has all kinds of DIY and crafty projects but I haven't made anything from the book. To be honest it was a tad lame and a lot of the stuff was 70's fugly - but thats getting off subject. I still respect her passion for craft and glad she's leading the way bringing together other forward thinking craft masters.
The point is, crafts are awesome. Girls are awesome.
