Girlcore Recommended Summer Reading

As mentioned in an earlier post, one of our beloved Girlcore members, Becky Mills, is headed to Peru for 2 months to apprentice with a real live shaman! We will miss her dearly. Since she'll be secluded in the jungle for all that time she asked the girls to recommend some good reading. I thought I'd post the results:

Naomi's Picks:
The Corrections - Jonathan Franzen
Lanark - Alasdair Gray
Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides
The Contortionist's Handbook
Mao II - Don Delillo
Invisible Monsters - Chuck Palahniuk (anything by him in fact)
and maybe some Paul Auster

Carmelita's Picks:
anything by Haruki Murakami but 2 I really like are The Wind Up Bird Chronicle and South of the Border/West of the Sun
Wonderland Avenue by Danny Sugarman
anything David Sedaris (Me Talk Pretty One Day is my fave)
Be My Baby by Ronnie Spector
Colors Insulting to Nature by Cintra Wilson
and anything by Philip K. Dick. there are like 40 books...druggie science fiction

Lolo's Hippie Picks:

The Soul Of Money by Lynne Twist (recent, im reading it now)
The Life Of The Masters by Baird T Spalding (super old, beautiful)
Shantaram by Gregory Davis Roberts (really captivating story of a dude escaping from prison moving to India)
Letters To A Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke (my granny's fave book)

Julia's Picks:
VALIS- phillip k dick
high rise or cocaine nights -- ballard
a confederancy of dunces --- Tool ( fucking hilarious )
the master and margarita (bulokov or something like that- russian)
any Borges book- short stories
The savage detectives -- bolano (chilean writer but it happens in mexico. i do recomend this for any trip in Latin America)
Special service (Pantaleon y Las visitadoras in spanish. Mario Vargas Llosa, its peruvian, it happens in the jungle).

Kirsten's Pick:
TWILIGHT!

*GIRLCORE* DOES DISCO

*GIRLCORE* are DJ-ing at a real club this Friday - the Double Club. If you haven't been there yet, the Double Club is an Congolese inspired 'pop-up' space created by The Prada Foundation and the people who brought us Momo and Sketch - they even imported the bar in the main room from Africa.

We're DJ-ing in room 1 - the sparkly club room. It has a rotating dance floor, a big disco ball and LOADS of fun twinkly lights - soooo fitting for disco - and all kinds of disco - expect everything from Abba to Glass Candy. It's FREE!

See you there?
